Rude Songs

My fifteen-year-old son went to Sicily on a geography field trip last week. What were they studying? Volcanoes, of course! There remained a certain degree of uncertainty right up to the last minute as to whether or not the trip would actually happen due to another volcano’s ongoing tantrum, but their Alitalia flight took off on time, their Roman connection went smoothly, and by mid-afternoon they were singing rude songs on a Sicilian bus.
Actually, scratch the part about singing rude songs on the bus. I made that up. I don’t think adolescents sing rude songs on buses anymore because they’re all constantly plugged into their i-Pods. Imagine the cacophony if everyone let rip in a spontaneous, individual sing-along!
But back when I was going on geography field trips, or on any kind of school trip involving a bus, you could be sure that, within minutes, there’d be dodgy lyrics resonating up and down the aisles. Not that I ever joined in; I was far too shy to sing Gang Bang Suzie along with the popular people. I was also far too innocent to have any inkling as to what the song was about, but the amount of eye rolling, head shaking and forehead rubbing taking place in the adult section suggested it wasn’t about a girl with a double-barreled last name. Nevertheless, I lay awake for quite a few years trying to decipher the truth about Suzie. Sweet, eh? Something tells me my son never wasted any neurons trying to figure out the essence of Rihanna’s Rude Boy.
Oh well!
The funny thing is that I’m still occasionally hit with a musical eureka moment, twigging the osé gist of an old pop lyric decades later. For instance, there’s a line in the classic Eagles track Life in the Fast Lane that only clicked a short while ago. Which one? Suffice to say that until recently I thought the people in the song were trying to get off the freeway! And I must admit to still being a little confused by Journey’s Anyway You Want It. Just a little bit, mind you! Pff!
How about you? Are there any song lyrics that made your eyebrows ping years after you first heard them?
Before your mind starts shuffling through its vast musical databank, allow me to indulge in another Proud Mama moment and share my son’s cinematographic take on his trip to Sicily. It’s a cute, fun, breath of fresh air, bound to put a smile on your face!  The music’s good, too, with no rude lyrics. That is, unless I’m missing something… http://www.vimeo.com/12080820

Ever thought about what the Eagles "Hotel California" was really about ? There is lots of speculation going on out there and it would seem that it has nothing to do at all with a romantic hotel on Highway 1.... I'd figured that one out back then but not much else. There are many songs that get a raised eyebrow moment when I hear them, Boston's "More than a Feeling" is one of them as we heard it over and over again on our school ski trips. Aaah, memories, although mine is failing me to say which songs actually DO get the eyebrow...

Ah, yes. Lyrics used to be subtle enough those of us who didn't want to quite understand all of "that" didn't have to. I miss those days. ;-) Now I have to look up the Fast Lane lyrics!
