MYSTIFIED...AND OFFICIALLY FAMOUS!

I woke up this morning and realized that, as of yesterday, I’m officially famous. Why as of yesterday? Because I got my first Amazon review from a complete stranger! Sure, there are other reviews of “Mucho Caliente!” on Amazon, but until yesterday they were all from people with whom I’ve had some sort of contact, be it in person, over the phone, or by email. I love their reviews, and am infinitely grateful to them for taking the time to write nice things about my book. But the review I got yesterday from the mysterious “Diabolik” gave me a new, sparkly, shivery, exhilarating feeling. Because I don’t know him. At all.
I know “Diabolik” is a man, because he says so. He obviously enjoyed my book, describing it as “unexpectedly good” (although he “only” gave me 4 stars - all the other reviews have been 5 stars, but then again, I’ve had some form of contact with these people.). I was happy to hear that he laughed a lot, too! Oh, and I’m ever so sorry he had issues with the cover, and can totally understand that reading a book with a pretty, sexy girl on the front when you’re a guy might be a little embarrassing. But then again, men don’t usually read romantic comedies…
Which brings me to something that’s been playing on my mind since I found this new review last night: who is this mysterious “Diabolik”, how did he come across my book, and what made him buy it? It’s not like “Mucho Caliente!” has been plastered on billboards all over the world; I’m the only one to have done any promotion for my book, and it’s been limited to specialized loops and blogs on the Internet. There have been some official critiques (all good, by the way!) from various reviewers, but that’s also different: they didn’t pay for my book; they received it either from me or from my publisher. So what makes a man buy an obscure romantic comedy, featuring a girlie cover, written by an unknown author, on Amazon? I’m mystified!
“It’s just random,” shrugged my fourteen-year old son, shoving his plate into the dish-washer after we’d discussed it over dinner last night. His jeans were so low they practically sat beneath his bottom, which struck me as pretty random too, not to mention bloody uncomfortable. What’s with this silly fashion?
“You’re not supposed to know who your readers are,” said my husband, swiveling his eyes in amusement. “That’s the whole point of being published!”
Puh-lease! I know that. Of course I do! It’s just that when it happens for the first time, it’s a funny feeling. Actually, it’s great feeling, particularly since my mystery reviewer enjoyed my book. I hope he liked it enough to tell his friends to buy it too, and that they’ll enjoy it enough to go to the trouble of leaving comments on Amazon, and tell their friends about it. Because, fundamentally, all I wanted to do while writing “Mucho Caliente!”, was entertain people, show them a good time. It was about sharing my zany, mental vagabonding with other people. Fame was the last thing on my mind; I just wanted to share the luuuuvvvv.
Today, as I write this, I’m slowly coming to terms with the extraordinary fact that, thanks to a man who calls himself “Diabolik”, I’m officially famous! The luuuvvv is spreading! Who’d have thunk it?
