No puede ser él. Es imposible. ¿Cómo va a ser él? ¡Dios! ¡Pero si es él! ¡Es Emilio Caliente, el rompecorazones latino! ¿Cómo es posible que alguien como yo vaya sentada junto a él en un vuelo a Ibiza? Pero si tendría que estar tras la cortina, sentado adelante en primera clase... ¿Por qué precisamente ahora? ¿Por qué justo él? ¿Por qué tuve que ser yo?
Sin que se haya dignado aún a dirigirme siquiera una mirada, tras un cambio vital que me ha costado semanas y un montón de buenos propósitos, este tipo ha disparado en mí un cortocircuito en toda regla. Intento esconderme detrás del pelo, aprieto los puños, cierro los ojos y me repito en voz baja: «Me llamo Gemma Talbot. Soy guapa, inteligente, vuelvo a estar soltera y a controlar todo lo que pasa en mi vida». Sí, claro... ¡Menudo chiste! Estoy sudando a mares. Nerviosa. Me peino hacia atrás el pelo con los dedos, me aliso las cejas y me obligo a creer que me he retocado el maquillaje antes del vuelo, aunque solo sea un poquito.
Vaya, ¿no podría largarse un par de minutos y volver después? Así tendría yo tiempo para prepararme física y mentalmente para esta situación... Tendrían que poner en los aviones una escotilla de emergencia con una escalera secreta para que se pudiera llegar rápido desde la cabina de los pasajeros hasta la bodega: así, una podría ponerse a toda prisa una ropa más apropiada, encontrar unos zapatos mejores o incluso coger ropa interior limpia de la maleta. Además tendrían que poner un cuarto de baño a bordo suficientemente grande, con luz cálida y de tono rosa pálido, de esa que suaviza el color de la cara y refuerza la autoconfianza, no como esos tubos zafios de color verdoso que lo único que hacen es resaltar los poros, el envejecimiento prematuro de la piel y el vello de la cara. En la oferta tampoco deberían faltar productos de belleza de gama alta, muestras de los mejores perfumes y cremas para maquillaje de última generación. Todo ello gratis, claro está. Sí, incluso en un vuelo relámpago de cuarenta minutos entre Barcelona e Ibiza. ¡Y en este vuelo más que en ningún otro!
Así empieza la comedia romántica de Francesca Prescott, un libro de tapa blanda que, una vez empezado, no se puede soltar hasta que uno no lo ha terminado. Lo único, para secarse las lágrimas de risa. Y tengo que reconocer que eso mismo me ha pasado a mí con esta entretenida lectura, a pesar de ser un lector masculino. Aún con más motivo, las lectoras reconocerán a muchas amigas o conocidas (o incluso a sí mismas) en determinadas situaciones y comportamientos que aparecen el libro, y se divertirán mucho más. Francesca, con la que tuvimos oportunidad de mantener una entrevista en Ibiza, engarza con maestría en su novela fantasía, retazos autobiográficos y el colorido local de la isla. Retrata los tipos a la perfección y consigue evocar en el lector la sensación de habérselos encontrado en algún momento y algún lugar de la isla.
Ante las preguntas insistentes sobre cuál fue la playa, cuál fue el chiringuito donde se produjo el suceso que desencadenó la escritura de esta historia, la autora logra con gran habilidad evitar la respuesta una y otra vez. No obstante, da la impresión de que ese momento pudo producirse hace años, en el Tropicana de Cala Jondal.
En la vida real, Francesca –fan declarada de Ricky Martin– está casada con un abogado que trabaja como jurista en uno de los grupos empresariales del sector del lujo más importantes de Suiza. Comparte con sus dos hijas la afición por los caballos, es una amazona empedernida. No obstante, la gran pasión de su vida es la escritura. Vive con su familia cerca de Ginebra. Hace ya muchos años que viene casi periódicamente a Ibiza a visitar a una amiga que vive cerca de Santa Inés y cuyo trasunto en la ficción tiene un gran peso en la historia.
Esta ópera prima de 336 páginas, escrita en inglés, lleva toda la pinta de convertirse en un auténtico best seller. En la página sobre literatura Long & Short Reviews fue elegido recientemente libro del año. Solo nos queda esperar que aparezca pronto publicado en español y en alemán. Er ist es nicht. Das ist unmöglich. Natürlich ist er es nicht! Oh Gott! Doch er ist es wirklich! Es ist der Latino-Herzensbrecher Emilio Caliente! Wie kann es nur möglich sein, dass jemand wie ich auf einem Flug nach Ibiza neben ihm sitze? Er müsste doch vorne hinter einer Gardine versteckt in der ersten Klasse sitzen. Warum nur jetzt? Warum genau er? Warum bloß ich?
Ohne mich auch nur eines Blickes gewürdigt zu haben, hat er bei mir nach Wochen, in denen ich mein Leben geändert und guten Vorsätze gefasst habe einen Kurzschluss ausgelöst. Ich versteck mich hinter meinem Haar, balle meine Fäuste zusammen, schließe meine Augen und sage leise vor mich hin: „Mein Name ist Gemma Talbot. Ich bin hübsch, intelligent, jetzt wieder Single und habe das Sagen, was mein Leben an begeht.“ Ja, richtig. Was für ein Witz! Ich schwitze. Ich bin unruhig. Ich kämme mein Haar mit den Fingern zurück, streiche meine Augenbrauen glatt und wünsche mir, dass ich doch bloß mein Make-up vor dem Flug etwas aufgefrischt hätte.
Könnte er nicht bitte für ein paar Minuten verschwinden und dann wiederkommen, sodass ich einfach etwas Zeit hätte, um mich körperlich und mental auf diese Situation einstellen zu können? Flugzeuge sollten eine Notluke mit einer Geheimtreppe haben, über die man schnell von der Passagierkabine in den Gepäckbereich gelangt, um rasch mal ansprechendere Kleidung, ein besseres Paar Schuhe oder sogar frische Unterwäsche aus seinem Koffer holen zu können. Zudem müsste es eine ausreichend große Bordtoilette mit warmen, rosa Softtone-Licht geben, das der Gesichtsfarbe schmeichelt und das Selbstvertrauen stärkt – und nicht diese gemeine, grünlich strahlende Leuchtröhre, dank der nur große Hautporen, vorzeitige Hautalterung und Gesichtshaare betont werden. Das Angebot sollte auch kostenlose Schönheitspflegeprodukte der gehobenen Preisklasse und Gratisproben der besten Feuchtigkeitsspender sowie Make-up-Cremes aus neuster Forschung umfassen. Ja, auch auf einem vierzig Minuten dauernden Flug von Barcelona nach Ibiza. Auf diesem Flug ganz besonders!
So beginnt Francescas Prescotts romantische Komödie, ein Paperback, das man nicht mehr aus der Hand legt, wenn man erst einmal angefangen hat es zu lesen. Höchstens, um sich die Tränen vom Lachen wegzuwischen. Und das passierte sogar mir als männlichem Leser dieser unterhaltsamen Lektüre. Die weibliche Lesergemeinde wird darin sicherlich Geschlechtsgenossinnen – oder gar sich selbst – in bestimmten (Verhaltens-)Situationen wieder finden und noch viel mehr amüsieren. Geschickt verknüpft Francesca, die wir zum Interview auf Ibiza trafen, Phantasie, Selbsterlebtes und inseltypisches Lokalkolorit in ihrem Roman. Göttlich beschreibt sie Typen, von denen man sich beim Lesen einbildet, sie schon einmal irgendwann und irgendwo auf der Insel getroffen zu haben.
Auf bohrende Fragen, an welchem Strand, in welcher Beach-Bar sie denn das zum Schreiben dieser Story auslösende Erlebnis hatte, weicht sie immer wieder geschickt einer Antwort aus. Es scheint aber so, als sei es vor Jahren in der Cala Jondal im Tropicana gewesen.
Im wahren Leben ist Francesca – sie ist Ricky Martin Fan - mit einem Anwalt verheiratet, der Firmenjurist bei einem der größten französischen Luxuskonzerne ist. Mit ihren beiden Töchtern teilt sie die Leidenschaft für Pferde, sie ist eine begeisterte Reiterin. Aber ihre größte Leidenschaft ist das Schreiben. Sie wohnt mit ihrer Familie in der Nähe von Genf. Seit vielen Jahren kommt sie – fast regelmäßig – nach Ibiza um ihre tatsächlich in der Nähe von Santa Ines wohnende Freundin zu besuchen, deren Pendant in der Story eine Hauptrolle spielt.
Der 336 Seiten umfassende in Englisch verfasste Erstlingsroman hat durchaus das Zeug zum Bestseller. Auf der Long & Short Reviews book site wurde er kürzlich zum Buch des Jahres gekürt. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass er bald auch in Spanisch und Deutsch erscheint. It’s not. It can’t be. It bloody well can’t be! Oh my goodness; it is! It’s Latino heart-throb, Emilio Caliente! Why is someone like him sitting next to someone like me on this flight to Ibiza? He should be up front, behind the curtain, hidden away in first class. Why now? Why him? Why me?
Without so much as a glance in my direction, he’s short-circuited weeks of life changing, positive affirmations. Hiding behind my hair, I clench my fists, shut my eyes and silently recite, “My name is Gemma Talbot. I’m a beautiful, intelligent, newly single woman and I’m taking control of my life”. Yeah, right. What a joke! I’m sweating. I’m fidgeting. I’m finger combing my hair, smoothing my eyebrows and wishing I’d retouched my makeup before boarding.
Can’t he go away for a few minutes and come back when I’ve had time to pull myself together, both mentally and physically? Planes should have an emergency hatch with a twisty staircase from the passenger area down into the hold, so you can get to your suitcase, grab a change of clothes, a more appropriate pair of shoes, and maybe even a change of underwear. There should be a decent sized bathroom with pink, soft-tone lights to flatter your complexion and boost your self- confidence, not that vile, green, fluorescent glare that only emphasises your enlarged pores, your premature lines, your facial hair. There should be baskets of complimentary upmarket cosmetics, sample freebies of the greatest and latest scientific breakthroughs in moisturisers and makeup. Yes, even on a forty-minute flight from Barcelona to Ibiza. On this flight especially.
And that’s how Francesca Prescott opens her romantic comedy, a paperback in the unputdownable category. Well, maybe you’ll need to pause to wipe the tears of laughter from your eyes, which even I as a male reader found myself having to do as I chuckled my way through this entertaining read. Francesca’s female readership will certainly identify with the situations and relationships depicted so amusingly in this book. The authoress, who kindly agreed to be interviewed here in Ibiza, skilfully blends imagination, personal experience and local colour into her writing. She has brilliant knack for describing the type of person you could swear you have met at some time here on the Island.
When pressed as to the particular cove or beach bar where she had the particular experience that triggered her story, she carefully avoids being drawn. But putting two and two together, it seems to have been some years ago at Cala Jondal in the Tropicana.
In real life, this Ricky Martin fan is married to the in-house lawyer for a major Swiss luxury brand. She shares a passion for horses with her two daughters and is an accomplished rider, but her greatest passion is her writing. She and her family live in the vicinity of Geneva. For many years now, she has been a regular visitor to Ibiza where she stays with a female friend who has a place near Santa Ines and who appears as one of the main protagonists in the novel.
This 336-page debut publication in English has all the makings of a bestseller. It was recently voted the Book of the Year on the Long & Short Reviews book site. So we eagerly await its appearance in German and Spanish translation.
