Proud Mama Presents: "A Day in the Life" by Greg Bossert
Posted on: Tuesday, January 12, 2010
The kids are back at school, and I’m having a “Proud Mama” moment! You see, my fifteen-year-old son is a budding filmmaker.
Greg’s interest in making films began a couple of months ago, when my husband and I bought him a video camera and some editing software. This interest soon turned into a passion, and Greg now takes his camera everywhere, tapes miles of footage, then spends hours in his room laying tracks and editing.
I know he’s got it bad because he’s developed a tendency to stay up until super late at night. Over the Christmas holiday, Greg got his sleeping patterns in a complete muddle, going to bed at hours reserved for insomniacs, and showing up for his cocoa pops at one thirty in the afternoon looking like a zombie with a bed-head. While breakfast debris at inappropriate hours can become exasperating, I’m not going to complain about him spending so much time doing something creative he’s increasingly passionate about. Some of my friends have teenagers who shuffle through life with scowly faces and hunched shoulders, motivated by nothing other than hanging out in dodgy places doing dodgy things. Not that Greg doesn’t enjoy a little social hanging out once in a while; he does, and I’d rather not think about the level of dodginess involved. But it’s great to see he’s more than happy to stay in and amuse himself in a creatively constructive manner.
Anyway, last week he told me he’d had an idea for a new short film, but couldn’t shoot the footage without a tripod. Could we go to the shops to see if we might find one? Frankly, I wasn’t sure we’d find what he needed at the local shopping centre, but as it turned out one particular shop offered tripods galore. We came home with something light and practical, and Greg immediately vanished into his bedroom and shut the door.
I hardly saw him for twenty-four hours. Eventually, after yet another extremely late night, another zombie-style mid-afternoon breakfast, followed by a few more hours fine-tuning his work, Greg stuck his head out of the door and called me to “come and see. I tore myself away from my current fascinating activity (sorting socks) and settled down on Greg’s spare stool for a private screening of “A Day in the Life”.
Wow! It was brilliant!
This cute, humor-injected, nine-minute film is Greg’s first “scripted” production, the first time he’s made something with a storyline. Although his previous films are lovely to watch, he’d always limited himself to filming beautiful images of nature, or setting his skateboarding exploits to music. This time he’d attempted something far more ambitious, and thoroughly enjoyed the process.
I know I’m his mother and therefore genetically biased, but I’m really impressed by Greg’s “cinematographic debut”. As a writer, I know exactly what Greg means when he says he loses track of time when he’s editing, becoming so involved in his work to the point where he becomes impervious to everything going on around him. It’s a wonderful feeling, but it’s even more wonderful to see my son so fired up by his creative endeavors.
And now, without further ado, I give you “A Day in the Life”, by Greg Bossert!
Lots of love,
Francesca (aka Proud Mama!)
